Grant Lindsay- argumentative essay

Should We Ban Guns?

Should We Ban Guns?
This topic has been very controversial in the past years with the left-wing wanting to ban all guns and the right wanting fewer restrictions. In my opinion, I think we need to meet somewhere in the middle. The left-wing has had their agenda set to ban guns since day one and would love to take them all on the extreme side of there thinking. The right-wing extreme view would be to not have any restrictions at all and if you have the money and the know-how to use the firearm you should be able to own it.

The left tends to push for more restrictions on everything including ammo and gun sales. Most on the left say that they just want to ban AR-15s and AK-47s and what they deem unsuitable for the common everyday people. AR-15s have been on the chopping block for a while now and have had the most attacks from the left to get banned. Many people say that AR in AR-15 stands for "Assault Rifle" when they are actually is informed and it stands for arma- light which is the company that designed the platform for the U.S Military. The AR-15 was designed to be lightweight and ergonomic for the user to feel comfortable with and can easily manipulate. The left group loves to bring up how "powerful" the 556/223 round that the AR shoots, in the world of ammo the 556 is nothing more than a varmint round and was designed to mame and not kill the target for POW situations. The 556 is a very popular round do to its size and power in the hog hunting community. Feral hogs have thick armor like a plate in their shoulders and very thick skills and your common rifle rounds for deer hunting do not do the job as well as the small fast 556 round that is shot out of the AR. The left likes to bring up the idea that you do not need 30 rounds in a magazine. in my opinion, I think if you give someone an inch they will take a mile and they will ban just more than 30 round mags. Many on the left say that AR-15s are fully automatic and that is just not true most Ar-15s are semi-automatic which simply means that if you pull the trigger once one bullet comes out, fully automatic means if you pull and hold down the trigger it will continue to shoot until you run out of ammo or in the case that the gun malfunctions. The left media has made up a term they use to confuse people into thinking that every AR is full auto, they use the term fully semi-automatic.

The Right-wing has a completely different view on the gun debate and the extreme view is to be able to get any firearm you want when you want. The Right feels that if you want a fully auto AR you should be able to go buy a Full Auto Ar-15. The right-wing person that is more common is more on the line of leaving everything how it is because it is just fine and we already have background checks to see if you are a convicted felon or can not own a gun for any reason. At any gun store, there is a mixed background check to buy any firearm at any time. the background check takes 15-20 minutes to fill out and come back a pass or not. As of now to buy a rifle in most states you have to be 18 years old and have no restrictions not allowing you to buy a gun, you need to be 21 to buy a pistol with the same requirements as a getting a rifle. Most right-wing people agree that it isn't a gun problem we have it's a people problem the U.S has and banning firearms will do nothing to stop the violence, people will find a way to kill each other if they want to kill each other whether it be with a knife or a car. To be safe with a firearm you just need training and the people who grow up with guns and have had guns all of there lives do not have problems with guns and are responsible with them. I personally grew up with firearms and my dad thought me the right and wrongs of firearm training and I think that's the reason I am safe with my firearms.
In the article by Norman turner called Bullet Guide: size calibers and types, he explains what the size of the bullet has to do in relation to the caliber. the caliber is how big the bullet is in thousand of an inch. so the 223/556 is aa 22 caliber bullet which is 22 thousands of an inch. the 223 is very small when it is compared to many other common rifle rounds like the 30-06 or the 308, the 308 is 30 thousands of an inch. the 30-06 was used in our military as the common round shot out of the M1 Grand. in the article, it shows a chart of the common bullet sizes and you will see that 223/ 556 is very small for a rifle round.
In my personal opinion, I think that all types of guns should be allowed to be owned by law-abiding citizens of the U.S. I have shot guns since I was able to walk and I have been brought up with guns my whole life. Politicians like to say we have a gun problem but we actually have a people problem. If someone wants to kill someone else they will find a way to do it and in the past, we have seen that they always find a way to kill that person, some may use a car to kill people or a knife. I believe in the saying that if you give someone an inch they will take a mile if we let liberal politicians get their foot in the door and have a say at gun control they will take everything. I personally own an AR and I have never had a single problem with it shooting anyone because its a tool, not a person and cant kill someone without an operator behind it.
The Ar was adopted into military use because we needed a firearm to take over for the M1 Grand. We needed a firearm that could hold more ammo and that could be fired full-auto and semi-auto. they picked the 556 round due to how small and lightweight it was, this meant that one shoulder could carry a lot more ammo into the field and would be better suited for a firefight against an AK-47 which was more commonly used in the middle east. A YouTuber/ blogger/ radio host steven crowder makes a lot of youtube videos showing how stupid the left can be when it comes to the firearms world. one of my favorite videos he has is where he has set up a table of firearms and had random people on the street come up with " logical gun control" or " common-sense gun control" he had people come up and pick what guns should be allowed to the U.S citizens and what rifle rounds should be allowed and in most cases, they said that the AR-15 should not be allowed and the 30-06 should be and when it got to the bullets the 30-06 wasn't allowed due to how big the bullet was and the 556/223 was allowed. They were ok with the rifle round but not the rifle that shoots it being the Ar-15 due to it being a black scary/ tactical looking gun.
The United States was founded on a base set of rights that everyone should have and in those base sets of rights falls the 2nd amendment which is the right to bear arms. Many Anti-gun activists say that we should no listen to the second amendment and we should ban firearms due to the fact that the founding fathers couldn't have seen that we would have AR-15s and Ak-47s and the second amendment was made with single-shot muskets in mind. If that is the case we should reconsider all of our rights because I don't think that the founding fathers knew that we would have Facebook and Twitter and other social media platforms that could use the spread of everyone's right to speech across the whole world by the click of a button.
I think that if we try and take guns away from law-abiding citizens we would be doing the U.S a disservice and would be taking away a lot of our world power that is seen by the other big dogs like china and this could be seen as a weakness and they might try to invade now that the everyday person doesn't have a means of protecting themselves and our country in a well-armed militia.

  2. you have a great essay, but just sounds more informative from both sides, not really getting what your own point of view on which side you fall under, its great to have ideas from both sides but only if you are going to argue why you disagree with the other side's stand point, just think about where you stand and in your opinion you will have a great thesis, broaden your intro on that and just outline how your essay will explain your opinion, other than that looking forward to the final draft and reading what you think about this topic

  3. Hi Grant! This wall a well-written essay and you did a good job of developing your thoughts. However, I worry that your argument may have gotten lost in the essay.

For instance, your introductory paragraph should end with your thesis, and your thesis should be one sentence that wraps up the entire argument of your paper. I would focus on writing that sentence to ensure that your argument stands out.

I also worry that using the terms the "left" or the "right" side takes away from your argument about gun control. It may be fine for this assignment, but remember that not all Democrats and not all Republicans feel the same way about firearms. For instance, Democrats in Texas are historically pro-gun. Perhaps it might be better to say "pro-gun" and "pro-gun control", this would keep both parties in a positive light which further pushes your argument that we should be a mix of both.

Other than that, I would check for minor grammatical errors. Great job! Best of luck, feel free to reach out to me with any questions at thorton1@stallions.abac.edu!
